If you are doing the P90X 90-day fitness program by Beachbody, then you know how hard it is! Many people get burned out and tired, losing the energy that’s needed to get through the P90X workouts.
Here are some tips to keep your energy levels high while doing P90X by Tony Horton.
As Tony Horton has said, “Your body runs on food you put in your mouth”. Exercise is not enough – to get great results, pay attention to what you are eating. Many people make the mistake of eating too few calories while doing P90X. They think that the fewer calories they eat, the more weight they will lose. This is not necessarily true! If you lower your calorie intake too much, your body will think it’s starving and your metabolism will slow down, making it harder to lose weight and lowering your energy levels.
P90X is an advanced fitness program and you need proper fuel to maintain the high energy levels you will need to complete the P90X program. Make sure you determine your daily nutrition and caloric needs. The P90X Nutrition guide explains this on page 5. You can easily figure our your caloric intake needs by using your resting metabolic rate, daily activity burn, and the calories required for your exercise needs.
Let’s be honest here. You don’t need to lose all your weight in the first 2 weeks of the P90X program! Many times I get email from people who are disappointed because they cannot see their abs or they have not yet lost weight in the first 2 weeks of P90X! It took a long time for you to get out of shape, and now you need to be patient while getting back into shape.
If you already figured out your caloric needs and are running out of energy during your P90X workouts, then you need to look at recalculating your calories. Be smart about this. If you think adding a fatty bagel with cream cheese is going to do the trick, you are wrong! This type of food can add as much as 400 – 500 calories which is too much!
You probably only need as addtional 200 – 300 calories to increase your energy levels. Nuts, dried fruits, Shakeology protein drink, or P90X protein bar are perfect choices to give the right amount of calories in a nutritious way!
If you are eating the right amount of calories but still feeling wiped out during your P90X exercise, it could be due to eating too far before you exercise. If you eat lunch at noon, and exercise at 5 PM with no food in-between, you will be likely be to tired to have a good workout.
Eat smart and eat enough. Read the P90X Nutrition Guide prior to starting P90X. Sticking to a good nutrition plan is half the battle!

Insane Abs is 33 minutes of taking your abs to new levels that you never knew existed! Shaun T. is an excellent fitness instructor. He explains how to do the moves before you start the exercise and continues to explain as you do them. Shaun also gives you excellent tips about breathing. Best of all, he is very motivating. The exercises are harder than any exercise you may have done and sometimes you may feel like you cannot continue, but Shaun motivates you to keep going.
Insane Abs starts with a warm up that just may tire you out! Shaun takes you through 5 minutes of different types of running in place and plyo moves. You do exercises like running in place with high knees and adding a twist in the upper body- that really warms up your core! Next, you learn how to do focused Tuck Jumps, Power Jumps, and T-Kicks in Shaun T. style. If that is not enough, you do another round of the same warm up, just faster. This is when the real fun starts!
You perform the next set of exercises on the floor. There is NO laying down with these floor exercises. The position is balancing on your buttocks, with legs raised out in front and upper body at an angle (chest and head up). This really makes you focus on the core. Shaun is excellent about keeping you focused and keeping you informed of how many more seconds you stay in any position.
Once you go through one set of ab exercises, you do it again, just faster! I thought I knew all the ab exercises but no! Shaun showed me moves I never saw like power abs. You start power abs by balancing on your buttocks with legs bent and wide and your upper body off the floor at a high angle. You bring the knees towards your chest. You keep your hands on the floor for balance but put your hands in the air for round 2. Shaun gets you going on core adduction exercises that will do you in.
The floor exercises require serious control and mental strength. You will also do moves like Low Plank Hops and Oblique Rotations from a plank position. Just when you think you had enough, Shaun throws another crazy exercise at you!
I had a tough time getting through Insane Abs but pushed my way through it. I really don’t think I could have done it without Shaun’s motivation to keep me focused mentally when my body said, “no more!”. I felt great when I finished the workout, a real sense of accomplishment.
Insane Abs is not for everyone but if you can keep up, you will have the best abs ever.

P90X Chest and Back is 53 minutes of intense pushing and pulling. The first time I did this P90X DVD, I was really feeling the pain! Chest and back are two of your largest muscle groups so it can be a real struggle to get through this one.
My goal was get some nicely toned back muscles and healthy, strengthened chest muscles. This exercise routine consists of 12 exercises mostly done as pushups or pullups. There are just a couple performed with weights (dumbbells). Once the first set of 12 exercises is complete, you start all over again! Whew and ouch!
When I first started, I could barely do a few pushups on my knees – my arms were shaking! At the end of the 90 days, I could do up to 25 pushups on my knees and felt strong. You definitely have to pace yourself for this Chest and Back routine. If you give it all you got during the first set of 12, you won’t have much left for the second set of 12!
I stuck with the pushups on my knees for a couple of reasons: I have a foot injury that prevented me from putting too much pressure on it and also I was able to get a more intense workout on my knees.
For the back exercises I used the green resistance bands, equal to 40 pounds. I don’t have anywhere in the television room to put a P90X pullup bar so that was not an option for me. You can see from my results that the resistance bands definitely got the job done…nicely toned back muscles for me!
My favorite exercise is the Heavy Pants (performed with either resistance bands or dumbbells). I used the dumbbells, starting with 8 pounds and ending up with 12 pound weights at the end of my 90 days. The Back Flys were pretty hard for me. I started with 3 pound weights, worked my way to fives, and every now and again I can use eights.
Tony does a great stretch routine before the real pain begins. The most important thing about all these exercises is to use proper form while doing them. Do the pushups correctly. Try it in front of a mirror so you can be aware of your body’s positioning. Good form is how you will get the best workout. Keep lots of water around, you’ll need it.
Not only did I benefit from toned, strong muscles in my back, but I also improved my posture and eliminated my back pain. Why? Because now my muscles do the job of keeping my back upright instead of just my spine.
If you are looking for a no-nonsense workout and are serious about transforming your body, then P90X is for you. I love it so much, I went through the P90X program two times.
Use the P90X Results and recovery drink with this one, you will need it!

Wow. I was starting P90X Lean program Phase 2 and was still interested! I felt a great sense of accomplishment on completing the first 30 days of Phase 1 and saw results. Sixty days to go and I couldn’t wait!
Phase 1 was about getting my body accustomed to doing the movements and learning how to complete each movement with good form. In P90X Phase 2, it was time to focus on repetitions and failure, and start increasing the weights I was using.
One mistake I made during this phase was not eating enough. In addition to P90X, I was hiking, trail running, and walking dogs at the shelter for several hours. Tony Horton reminds us during workout sessions to make sure we eat enough. I finally had to increase the number of calories I was taking in – all good, healthy food of course.
I started increasing the weights for all exercises. I went from the five-pound weights for shoulder presses to eight pound weights by the end of Phase 2. For triceps kickbacks, I used three-pound weights and increaded to five-pound weights. Don’t laugh! These weights may sound light to you, but they were sure weren’t for me!
When I first started doing the push-up routines in Phase 1, I could barely do five, even though I was on my knees! By the end of Phase 2, I was doing 12 on my knees and could see big differences in my chest muscles.

Kenpo X, one of my favorite exercise routines in P90X, was fun, fun, fun! My kicks were getting higher and I had better control over the movements.
Overall, I saw real gains during this phase. The P90X workout was still interesting and fun. On the weekends, I looked forward to rising at 6:30 am and pushing play! I felt great, was working hard, and seeing results. What could be better than that? P90X was like a wake up call for my whole body.
One thing I did not enjoy so much was that the Ab Ripper X workout followed a workout like legs and back. After doing a rigorous workout, I was pretty burned out. Instead, I modified the order of things by doing Ab Ripper X a few hours later or the next day. But I got it done!
As I mentioned in Phase 1 of my P90X review, each phase is divided into 4 weeks. The fourth week is a “recovery” week. By recovery week, I was ready to ease up a little on the workouts – my body was definitely tired. In recovery week, you get to do these exercises, repeating a couple of them to complete 7 days:
- Yoga X
- Core Synergistics
- Kenpo X
- X Stretch
- Cardio X
I love the Core Synergistics, a total body workout with cardio, stretching, and resistance. I was not a big fan of the Yoga X because it is 90 minutes. Although I had done lots of Yoga in classes and at home, I was never of fan of the 90-minute yoga classes. But I must admit, the yoga poses did wonders for my body, especially my back.
By the end of P90X Phase 2, I could see my muscle tone taking shape even more, the results of my hard work and Tony Horton’s muscle confusion training methods. I can’t emphasize enough, you get out of P90X what you put into it.
Stay tuned for P90X Phase 3, where I talk about my experience in the last phase of P90X.
As you read this P90X review, keep in mind that P90X may or may not be for you. If it is, go forth and Bring It! If not, there are many other Beachbody programs for you to choose from. Here’s to healthy, fit living!
