I get this question a lot – what is the difference between P90X and Insanity? Both P90X and Insanity will get you fit. Each program does so using a different method. P90X uses the muscle confusion technique while Insanity uses Max Interval training.
In a recent webinar I attended, Shaun T. pointed out three main ways that Insanity differs from P90X:
- No weights or bands
- Use your own body weight for resistance
- More cardio and plyometrics
Let’s take a closer look at the differences between P90X and Insanity.
P90X by Tony Horton
P90X is a 90-day fitness program that uses a technique called “muscle confusion.” P90X continually challenges the body’s muscles to new growth. The more you confuse the muscle, the harder your body has to work to keep up. The more variety you put into your workout, the better and faster your results. In P90X, you perform familiar exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, vertical leaps, bicep curls, shoulder press, and such.
P90X includes 12 workout routines, 3-phase nutritional plan, and fitness guide. You work out 6 days a week with an option on day 7 to rest or do X Stretch. You also need certain fitness equipment to perform most of the exercises: pull-up bar, resistance bands, and dumbbells. P90X gives you three programs from which to choose: P90X classic, P90X doubles, P90X lean.

Insanity by Shaun T
Insanity is 60-day fitness program that uses a technique called “MAX Interval Training.” With MAX Interval Training your moderate-intensity exercise gets replaced with maximum-intensity exercise, and your short intervals of intensity get replaced with shorter periods of rest. Simply put, you work harder and longer, and rest less. In month 1, Shaun puts you through aerobic and anaerobic intervals to build your fitness base. Every 15 days you take the fit test that counts as one of the workouts! Each subsequent time you do the Fit Test, you are also tracking your progress. These are not traditional or familiar exercises. You probably never did exercises like this before.
Insanity base package includes 10 workout routines, elite nutrition plan, fitness guide, and calendar. You work out 6 days a week and rest on day 7. There is just one program to choose from: INSANITY.
