It’s another New Year and like countless other people, you will wake up on January 1, 2010 with the intention of losing weight and getting in shape. You are not alone!

Here are some tips to help you succeed with your fitness resolutions, lose that weight, and get in shape!

  • Set realistic fitness goals. Make your fitness goals attainable. If you think that 1 week is enough time to lose 15 pounds or get those nicely toned arms, forget it. Neither of those fitness goals is realistic. There is no instant fix. If you want to lose weight, figure out a healthy weight for your height and frame, then determine a reasonable amount of time to get to your new weight. With exercise, be careful of taking on too much, too fast. It will just exhaust and maybe even injure you. Take it slow and set your fitness goals accordingly.
  • Diets don’t work. Diets are temporary fixes to your eating problem. When you finish “the diet”, YOU still have your eating problem. Get onboard with a lifestyle that will keep you healthy for life. The foods you consume on a daily basis affect your healthy everyday. With lifestyle changes, you modify or eliminate bad eating habits and replace them with good ones. Then maintain those good habits.
  • Ditch the junk food. Are you still buying junk food at the market and then “trying” not to eat it when you get home? Stop buying the junk food. Eliminate junk food from your life. Forget the processed food and sugar filled foods. That second of joy you think you get from junk foods can lead to health problems, feeling awful, and weight gain. When you start eating healthy foods, you will be amazed at how good you feel!
  • Schedule your exercise. So many people say, “I don’t have time to exercise”. What else are you doing? Busy surfing the Internet, watching TV, or doing a whole lot of nothing? Schedule your exercise just like you would any other important meeting or event. It’s important! Do it!
  • Create a home gym. Joining a gym can be expensive, so create one at home – it will cost much less. There are many alternatives to a gym like workout DVDs and WII fit programs. It’s also more convenient to work out at home. Click here for some great home fitness DVDs!
  • Cook and eat at home. Eating out is expensive and restaurant meals have significantly more calories then sometime healthy you can cook for yourself at home. Restaurants are in business because of their great tasting food which is filled with lots of added sugar, too much sodium, and loads of fat calories.
  • Follow a well-rounded fitness program. Do your research before starting any fitness program. If you never run and suddenly decide to start running 6 miles a day, that is not a good choice. In this case, a better plan is to include stretching, walking, and jogging until you work your way up to running.
  • Be patient. It took you a long time to get in your current shape. It will take some time to fix it.

6 ways to stop eating junk foodAre you a junk food junkie with a weakness for junk food that you can’t control? What is junk food? Junk food contributes little or no nutritional value to your diet. Instead, it contributes calories, fat, and makes you cranky. Making dietary changes in your life can be hard but you can do it. All it takes is a commitment by you to a healthier life. With that in mind, here are 6 tips to help you steer clear of junk food.

  1. If you find yourself eating too much fast food, save all your receipts for one week. Everyday, put your fast food receipts in safe place. At the end of the week, add up how much you spent on fast food. You may just be shocked at what you are spending on fast food. A couple of dollars here and there can easily add up to $50 or $100 per week. You can wean yourself off fast food by only spending half the amount the next week. Do the exercise again each week, cutting the amount spent each week in half until you get to zero. By then you should start feeling better and realize how much money you were throwing away on fatty food that made you cranky.
  2. Make a list of junk food you eat all the time. In an adjacent column, write down a healthy replacement snack for each item in your junk list. For example, if you wrote down Twinkies in the junk food column, you may want to replace it with strawberries and plain yogurt. Each week, pick one junk food and eat its replacement instead. Continue doing this until you are no longer eating the junk food but only the healthy replacements.
  3. Use visualization. Focus on how your life will change when you are no longer sugared up on junk foods. Focus on the changes: more energy, less cranky, more stamina, looking better, nicer skin, and so on.
  4. Do not buy junk food. Keep it out of your house. If you must have something sweet, walk to the nearest restaurant, sit down and order a single slice of cake or something else sweet. Take your time eating it, pay for it, and leave. Then go home.
  5. Eat breakfast, it’s the most important meal of the day! Eating a good breakfast will help you curb your hunger during the day. Eat complex carbohydrates. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Truth about belly fatIf you have a large belly, then you have a spare tire around your middle. If you are already working out, you are well on your way to losing it. Great! That fat around your middle can cause lots of problems if you do not reduce it. According to the Mayo Clinic, your belly fat surrounds your abdominal organs and can cause you serious internal health like:

  • Heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Stroke
  • Sleep apnea

If you are concerned, just get a tape measure and measure your waist. For men, if your waist measure 40 inches or more, you are carrying too much belly fat. For women, 35 inches or more is too much! Reducing your waistline takes work but it can be fun too!

Just 30 minutes a day of high intensity aerobic exercise will help you lose that belly fat. If you are just starting out, Slim in 6 or Hip Hop Abs are great choices. If you want a more intense workout, try Power 90 or P90X!

But exercise alone won’t be enough. You also need a healthy diet of whole grains, lean protein, fruits, and veggies to help you lose those extra inches. Don’t forget to limit your alcohol intake!
